VARIATIONS

Brake fluid varies according to high temperature performance capabilities. The fluid is given a "DOT" (Department of Transportation) designation based on its boiling point. Possible designations are DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5. A higher DOT rating signifies a higher brake fluid boiling point. The correct DOT rating for your brake fluid will be indicated in your owner's manual.

Modern brake systems generally use conventional DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid; these fluids are glycol-based. DOT 5 brake fluid is silicone-based and should be used when heavy brake action (and therefore high brake temperature) is expected. Examples include towing a trailer or driving in mountainous terrain.
